Every business owner asking about a new site eventually hits the same fork:
WordPress-style CMS, or a custom build from scratch. Both camps have strong opinions. Neither is wrong, exactly — they're just built for different jobs.
A CMS website in Ireland (WordPress, Squarespace, that world) wins on speed and cost. You can be live in a couple of weeks, and once it's built, you can log in and change the text yourself without calling anyone. Plugins cover most things a small business needs — bookings, galleries, basic e-commerce. For a lot of local businesses, that's plenty.
Custom website development is a different bet. There's no plugin bloat, no fighting a theme that almost does what you want. Everything gets built for the way your business actually operates — a booking flow that matches your real process, an admin panel that only shows what your staff need to touch, page speed that isn't dragged down by fifteen unused features. It costs more upfront. It also doesn't hit a ceiling in eighteen months.
So which one? Ask what your business needs to do in year one, and what it might need to do in year three. A café needs a menu, hours, and a contact form — that's a CMS job, full stop. A business planning to add online booking, a members' area, or an e-commerce shop with custom logic is going to outgrow a template fast, and rebuilding from a CMS onto something custom later usually costs more than building it right the first time.
There's a middle path too, worth mentioning: a custom-coded site with a lightweight, purpose-built admin panel, rather than a full CMS. It gives non-technical staff the same easy updates as a CMS, without the plugin sprawl and security patching that comes with WordPress at scale. It's not the flashiest option, but it's often the one that ages best.
The honest answer is that most Irish small businesses currently on template sites picked CMS by default, not by decision — it's what the last web person suggested. That's fine if it still fits. If your site's started to feel like it's fighting you, that's usually the sign it's time to look at what custom website development could actually do that the template can't.
