Mobile App Development Dublin: Do You Need an App or a Better Website?
By Fionnglas Tech ·
Someone has told you every business needs an app. Then a quote for mobile app development in Dublin turns up, and the figure is bigger than your last website, your van insurance, or both. Before you reply, ask one dull question: would your customers ever download it?
For most small local businesses, the answer is no. We build websites, so we lean that way, and you should know that going in. What follows is the test we would run before anyone spends money, including the cases where an app wins.
What customers actually do on their phones
Think about the last local business you used. You probably searched, tapped a result, checked the hours or the menu, then rang or booked. You didn't install anything. People keep apps for things they use every week: banking, the gym, a bus timetable, a coffee loyalty card. A barber in Finglas or a plumber with three callouts a week doesn't make that list.
A website that opens quickly on a phone does the same job. Nobody has to find the app store, wait for a download or set up an account.
When mobile app development in Dublin is worth paying for
Apps earn their keep in a few specific situations.
- Your customers come back weekly or more, and you want a permanent place on their home screen.
- The app needs the phone itself: the camera, GPS, or working with no signal.
- Push notifications are the product, like a delivery that updates minute by minute.
- Staff use it all day in the field, where a website would be fiddly.
If none of those sounds like you, an app is an expensive way to do something your website can already do. If one does, it's a fair question to put to mobile app developers in Dublin, with real numbers behind it.
What a good website already does on a phone
A tap-to-call button. A booking form that takes under a minute. A map pin that opens Google Maps. Opening hours that are correct. Payment at checkout. None of that needs an app. All of it depends on fast website development, because a page that crawls on a weak 4G signal loses the customer before they reach the button.
Plenty of small business sites still don't do this properly, and that is the first thing to fix. Good web development in Dublin usually costs less than an app, and the result works on every phone without a store listing.
Test the idea on your website first
There is a cheap way to find out. Put the feature on your website first, such as online booking or a loyalty sign-up, and watch it for two or three months. If customers use it every week and start asking whether there's an app, you have evidence. If nobody touches it, you've saved yourself the cost of an app.
When you do go and talk to developers, bring numbers: how many customers use the feature, how often, and on what devices. Anyone who doesn't ask for them isn't being careful with your money.
Still not sure which way to go? Send us your current site and we will tell you what it does and doesn't do on a phone. If an app turns out to be the right answer, we will say that too. Get in touch and we will take a look.
Do you need an app, or a better website? We build fast, mobile-friendly websites that often do the same job for far less.
